18 U.S.C. § 930(a) bars the knowing possession of firearms in federal facilities, which includes United States Post Offices. 39 C.F.R. § 232.1(1) bans carrying and storing firearms on “postal property” except for official purposes. Together, this law and regulation act as a total ban on the ability to carry a loaded firearm for self-defense on postal property and in the post office.
On June 18, 2024, the Second Amendment Foundation, joined by two individuals, and another civil rights organization, filed suit against the United States Attorney General. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against the carry and possession ban on USPS property, along with a declaration that the challenged law and regulation violates the Second Amendment.
