On May 14, 2026 Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed into law a blanket prohibition on the importation, manufacture, sale, purchase, and transfer of many commonly owned firearms defined by the challenged law as “assault firearms”, as well as magazines with the capacity to hold more than fifteen rounds of ammunition. The bans become effective July 1, 2026.
Within hours, Second Amendment Foundation, joined by partners the National Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition and two private individuals filed suit, challenging the constitutionality of the bans under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.
